Matthew 16:13–28 reveals a powerful contrast: who we are with Christ, and who we are without Him. This passage takes us into a conversation where Jesus not only reveals His identity but also reshapes ours.
Who Are We With and Without Christ?
As I sat with Matthew 16:13–28 this week, I was deeply moved by the contrast it reveals the difference between who we are with Christ and who we are without Him.
The passage begins with Jesus asking His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Then He makes it personal: “But who do you say that I am?” Peter responds with bold faith:
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus’ reply is powerful:
“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it…”
— Matthew 16:17–18
What struck me most was that Jesus called Peter blessed not because of Peter’s own wisdom, but because of divine revelation. Jesus even changed his name from Simon to Peter (Petros in Greek, meaning “rock”), gives him a new identity and purpose.
But just a few verses later, something unexpected happens.
A Startling Shift
Jesus begins to explain that He must suffer, die, and rise again. Peter, perhaps out of fear or love, protests:
“Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”
Jesus turns and says to him:
“Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me.”
~Matthew 16:23
How could Peter go from being called the rock of the Church to being rebuked as Satan in the same chapter?
This moment reminds us of a vital truth: our righteousness, our wisdom, our strength they don’t come from us. They come from Christ alone. Without Him, we are lost. With Him, we are made new.
With Jesus vs. Without Jesus
- With Jesus: We are blessed, righteous, chosen, and part of His Church.
- Without Jesus: We are misguided, broken, and vulnerable to deception.
Peter’s story is our story. One moment we’re walking in revelation, the next we’re stumbling in our own understanding. But Jesus doesn’t abandon us. He corrects us, restores us, and continues to call us forward.

Wow! What a beautiful message and God bless you!
Without Jesus we are nothing and full of sins. He loves us and corrects us when we go astray. Thank you Lord Jesus! Thank you for your salvation and grace🙏
So true! God bless you, Beza!
This Christmas season, I was reflecting on the passage when there was no communication between God and humanity for 400 years before Christ. I felt paralyzed just thinking about life without Christ. The greatest news for us as humans is Jesus! Because of Him, we get to communicate with the Creator of heaven and earth, the Great I AM, the one and only Almighty God.
