I wanted to share with you why I chose “herein is love” as the name of the blog. It’s of course inspired from 1 John 4:10 which says, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (ESV) I find no better place to begin on the journey to real hope, than what’s stated right here in this verse. It directs the way to love, real love, and it’s not that we loved God, oh no. We tend to make things about ourselves, or at least I sure do. However, we find in this verse that we are humbled before a God who loves us without any provocation on our part. So indeed it is NOT that we loved God. Scripture reveals to us over and over again just how true this is. Romans 3 tells us how there is none righteous, not even one… and that no one does good… there is no one who understands and no one who seeks after God. But what makes this hope so mind-blowing is that even despite that being true, God has loved us. He has loved us so much he actually sent his Son to be the propitiation or atoning sacrifice for our sins. Romans 5:8 says it like this, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (ESV) While we were in our sin-sickened state, enemies of God, Christ died for us. And for those who did receive him and believed on him, he gave the right to become children of God. What kind of love is this!? Well, it’s the kind that is a sure foundation for hope! And what better place to build on our journey to hope.
